| Gila Bend was our next stop after Palm
Springs. We had heard rumours on www.roadsideamerica.com of
the Space Age Motel and were just looking out for
it, but it turned out to have turned into a Best
Western with v. reasonable rates so we stayed
there. |

The next stop was Tucson but I popped these
pictures in with the Roswell ones as they are
such fine examples of space-age Americana. |
| Roswell was kind of like Stratford on Avon -
a nice little town that had built a tourist
industry out of bald guys. Only in Roswell
they're grey - or green - and don't wear a ruff. |

The UFO museum and research center (there are
more than one but this is the one we found open
as we wandered round on the Sunday) is pretty
much as it's portrayed in Roswell High.
Steer clear of the instant coffee in their
"cafe" (tables and a coffee machine)
though. |
| It's surprisingly international - there was a
Dutch lady on the desk, and they had (hallelulah)
a web browsing kiosk, so we sent a Happy Kwanzaa
card to Scott at work (as he had an easily
remembered email). |

Above you can see the center's fine display
of hubcaps on strings! The center was endearingly
evenhanded in its displays, giving full
prominence to the guy |
| who said the "strange symbols" on
the Roswell "UFO" were festive Xmas
packing tape (post-war shortages you see) and to
the post-pub crop circle artists in the UK. |

Most country stores have a large plastic
horse above the door, but this one had
Stetson-wearing aliens in the window (gone
native, huh). |
