These pictures of Xmas decorations South-West
style were taken at Grants - aptly enough, an old
uranium town - on the way from Santa Fe to
Holbrook. |
 |
 |
| We stayed in quite a few "old"
places on the way - the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook,
the Mizpah in Tonopah - and even though the cons
may not have been mod the rooms all had good
cable. |
 |
 |
We stayed in a real concrete wigwam. And it
was jolly cold! |
 |
 |
| We loved Lilo's cafe in Seligman so much in
February that we came back in December. Places
that do a good vegeburger (not to mention chips
'n' salsa in such quantity that it's a meal in
itself) are rare in AZ. |

Although they had a fine Route 66 giftshop
(though we had to go down the road to get our
Route 66 Toothpick Dispenser - it lights up!) it
was clearly the locals keeping it going, drawn by
a waitress the twin of Sally from Third Rock
From The Sun. |

 |
| The odd thing about the US is that although
they take Christianity a lot more seriously, they
don't get that excited about Christmas (although
we saw some fine decorations and lighting
displays, even in the desert - see the example
above from Seligman). |

In a way they have Christmas at Thanksgiving.
So Vegas is really cheap in mid December. We rang
round with a handful of quarters and got a room
with a view on the Strip (in the Frontier) for
$30. |
| Then we were really exciting and went out for
a Middle Eastern at the Kabob House in the
university area (another Feb. discovery) before
returning stuffed to watch new-season Buffy and
this new Angel spin-off. Even though the hotel
bar offered $1 margharitas we just couldn't be
budged. |
