Healthcare

Special Topics: [cancer] [dental problems]

Greyhounds are reasonably healthy dogs, although like all dogs they have to go to the vet now and then!

Like other sighthounds, their metabolism is a little different from "normal" dogs. Chemicals, from "household" chemicals like air fresheners and lawn treatments to dog-specific chemicals like certain flea treatments, may make your dog ill.

Ask your vet about the right sort of worm and flea treatments to use on your greyhound.

If they need a general anaesthetic, be sure to discuss the special needs of sighthounds with them. (See the ANESTHESIA section on the Shared Wisdom from the Greyhound-l Mail List - Medical Information web page).
Even with the newest anaesthetics, your dog may still be pretty groggy when you take him or her home in the evening after their treatment. It is worthwhile making a brief stop somewhere on the journey home to allow the dog to have a wee. Otherwise Dopey Dog may well feel so relaxed and relieved to be home that they let rip a couple of steps into the living room!
